It takes a village to raise a family these days. And, it also takes a BUM or 12. A #BUM is a Back Up Mom. A BUM can be a best friend, a special teacher, a neighbor, a Grandmother or anyone in your life that loves you and your children with the same veracity.
BUMs are special magical creatures (people) that embrace you and your family. A BUM knows your kids and their quirks, knows the rules, holds the line, shares the love and is always dependable. BUMs sooth you with the peace of mind that comes with knowing if your out of pocket, they can step in and everything will be ok. A BUM is someone that knows you have an incredibly hard job and sends a text before carpool to see if they can grab your kids. A BUM thinks about you and your needs before you know you need it. A BUM loves on your kids, encourages them and makes a conscious effort to be connected. Your kids innately know they are loved by the BUM and can count on the BUM.
The difference between a BUM and a nanny or trusted sitter is that a BUM isn’t paid and expects nothing in return. The BUM is just there when you need it, no questions asked. Last minute fire drill? They got you! Sick, no problem! Can’t help? Let me find someone who can! Men can be BUMS too, but I suppose they would be BUDS. Be it a BUM or a BUD, these special people in our lives are part of the support system for our families. As my dear friend calls it, OUR CHOSEN FAMILY. Some of us are not blessed with large families or family that is nearby, so we rely on these friendships, filled with acceptance, compassion, intention and commitment to one another.
